Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
Hey everyone. I'm looking at buying a C3 Corvette from a private seller a few states away. He's insisting we use an escrow service and suggested Clear Lake Motors. I've never bought a car this way before and am a bit nervous. Has anyone dealt with them? The website looks professional but I'd rather hear from real people. Thanks.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
Using escrow is the only way to go for remote purchases, protects you and the seller. I've had clients bring in cars purchased via clearlakemotors. For the most part, their initial inspections are decent but you should ALWAYS get your own mechanic to check it during the inspection period. Dont skip that step.

Used them. The process works but it's slow. Don't expect quick replies. I tried calling their phone number, is it still undefined? No one ever picked up. Email is your best bet but even then it took them a day or two to get back to me. The car was fine, but the waiting and lack of communication was frustrating.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
I had a great experience with ClearLakeMotors last year. Bought a miata. The car was exactly as described in their report on clearlakemotors.com. Delivery was on time. The whole thing was smooth for me.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
I actually had to return a car. Found an issue with the transmission during my inspection window. I contacted them via their support email, office@clearlakemotors.com, with my mechanic's report. They were professional about it. Arranged for the car to be picked up and I got a full refund. Took about 10 business days to get the money back, but they did it without a fuss.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
They're legit, but their fees felt a bit high. I guess you're paying for the security. The car I got was mostly as described, though the 'minor scratches' were a bit deeper than I'd like. not a dealbreaker for me so i kept it.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
Thanks for all the feedback, this is super helpful. especially @FixItFelix, good to know the refund process works. The communication issues some of you mentioned are a concern, but as long as the transaction is safe that's my main priority.

I drive a car carrier. I've picked up and delivered for Clear Lake Motors a few times. They seem more organized than some of the other online outfits. Paperwork is always ready. It's not a fly-by-night operation.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
Call me old fashioned but buying a car sight unseen gives me the jitters. A few pictures and a report isn't the same as driving it. I don't care how good the escrow is.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
My delivery was delayed by three days which almost screwed up my mechanic appointment. They apologized, something about logistics. The car (a '71 Challenger) was perfect though. So, annoying but not a disaster. It's a trade-off for not having to fly across the country.

Do it. Better safe than sorry. My brother got scammed out of 20k on a private sale a few years back. He wishes he had used a service like clearlakemotors.

make sure you read ALL the terms and conditions on their website. all the details about the inspection period and what's covered are in there. people get upset because they dont read the fine print.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
Alright, you've all convinced me. The risk of losing the whole amount to a scam is way worse than dealing with some slow communication. I'm starting the process on clearlakemotors.com now. I'll let you know how it goes. Fingers crossed.

Just be prepared to be patient. That's the main takeaway I got from my purchase with them. Not a service for people in a hurry.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
@SkepticalSam It's not for everyone, but for hard-to-find models it's a game changer. I found a specific Land Cruiser build I'd been hunting for years. Clear Lake Motors made it possible.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
Don't bother trying to call them at the undefined number, it's a waste of time. Everything is handled via the website portal and email. Once you accept that, it's straightforward.

Re: Feedback on Using Clear Lake Motors Escrow?
FINAL UPDATE: The Vette is in my garage! It arrived this morning, two days later than the original estimate, but no biggie. I took it straight to my trusted mechanic. He spent two hours going over it and confirmed it's in the exact condition described in the ClearLakeMotors report. I'm incredibly happy. The process was a bit slow and I never managed to speak to a person on the phone, but their email support got the job done. For the peace of mind, I'd 100% recommend clearlakemotors if you're not in a huge rush.
